Overview

Prepare to embark on a journey into Costa Rica's coastal waters, where darkness reveals one of nature's most mesmerizing phenomena – bioluminescence. As the sun sets and night envelops you, you'll settle into a comfortable kayak for a magical experience you'll cherish forever.

Your adventure begins with our knowledgeable bilingual guide leading you to prime spots where bioluminescent algae congregate. With each stroke of your paddle, a radiant bluish glow emanates, and beneath the surface, fish dart like celestial shooting stars.

In the Paquera Bay, bioluminescent plankton abounds. Even the gentlest of disturbances, like a kayak's glide or a hand through the water, conjures a dazzling display of shimmering lights.

Bioluminescent Kayak Tour Highlights:

This awe-inspiring tour harmoniously blends tranquility and beauty. Our kayak launch site, conveniently close to the Paquera ferry landing, offers easy access to calm gulf waters. Safety and enjoyment are paramount, and our expert guides ensure both.

At sunset, gather under swaying palm trees overlooking the bioluminescent bay for a warm welcome with complimentary refreshments. Our experienced guides, Luis and Jose, provide a briefing and assist with life jackets and kayaks. Whether a seasoned kayaker or beginner, everyone enjoys the full-hour tour in their kayak or a tandem one.

This intimate family-like adventure maintains small groups, with a maximum of 10 persons, including the guide. Along the way, Luis shares fascinating insights about the radiant water and the bay's marine life.

Upon returning to Bahia Rica beach, we provide fresh water, towels, and bathroom facilities for your comfort.

IMPORTANT - The Darker the Night, the Brighter the Experience:

For the most spectacular display, opt for a moonless night. During a full moon, moonlight can overshadow the bioluminescence. However, we offer sunset and full moon night kayak tours; consult our calendar or contact us to plan your visit.

Why Choose Bahia Rica's Bioluminescent Kayak Tour:

Bahia Rica pioneered the bioluminescent kayak tour in Paquera, thanks to Thomas and Vigdis, owners of Bahia Rica. Upon moving to Costa Rica, they discovered this hidden wonder right on their doorstep – a bay teeming with bioluminescent dinoflagellates year-round.

Our guides, Luis and Jose, are passionate about sharing this marvel. They're among the few certified bioluminescent guides in Costa Rica, sure to ignite your enthusiasm for this natural spectacle.

Logistics of the Bioluminescent Kayak Tour:

Practical details for our bioluminescent kayak tour include departure from the beach at Bahia Rica Fishing & Kayak Lodge. Departure times typically range between 18:00 and 19:30, with slight variations depending on the season. The tour itself lasts approximately 1 hour on the water, and we allocate an additional half-hour for briefing and preparations. This tour is beginner-friendly, making it suitable for those with minimal kayaking experience. The minimum age requirement is 10 years; however, for family tours, please reach out to us for additional information. We recommend a weight limit of 250 pounds (115 kg); if you have concerns regarding this, feel free to contact us. Each group comprises a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 persons. For larger groups, we arrange a second departure. Lastly, we kindly request that participants refrain from consuming alcohol before the kayak tour.

In terms of what to bring, we recommend having a headlamp, if available, for added visibility. Suitable footwear such as sandals or water shoes is advisable. Attire-wise, opt for light, water-resistant clothing, or bring a change of clothes as you may get wet. During the rainy season, it's a good idea to have bug spray on hand for added comfort during the tour. Join us at Bahia Rica and immerse yourself in the radiant beauty of bioluminescence as you become a part of this intimate group of kayakers. In the serene waters of Paquera Bay, you're not merely an observer; you're an active participant in nature's captivating light show, a year-round marvel awaiting your presence.
