Overview

Experience the real Costa Rica by maneuvering off-road through forests, rivers, waterfalls, and beaches in the Papagayo area of Costa Rica. You will drive your own semi-automatic, single person All Terrain Vehicle on trails that offer you a first-hand exploration of the country’s natural beauty.

This fast-paced adventure begins with transportation from your hotel. You will meet your bilingual guides who will help decide which trails are best suited for you and your group. This tour is designed for beginners as well as advanced drivers and anyone at least 16 years old with a valid driver’s license can participate. After discussing options and safety procedures, you will snap on your helmet and take off on this fun filled 2-hour adventure.

You’ll climb mountains, see spectacular views, take a dip in the Tempisque river, feel the power of the Las Pilas Waterfall, plus visit nearby villages and farms. As you ride, you will have the opportunity to see many tropical bird species, Howler and Spider monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and deer. This area also is home to nocturnal bats and big cats.

The Papagayo area surrounds a gulf located just south of the Santa Rosa National Park and includes several popular beaches. It is the perfect example of Costa Rica’s commitment to preserving its wildlife habitat. The biodiversity found here is an eco-tourist's dream.

Visiting this also area helps to support local communities, and funds the many privately owned nature tours offering exciting adventures, like this one, with a focus on preserving the environment.

This ATV tour includes ATV, a bilingual guide, trail entrances, safety equipment, bottled water, plus transportation from your hotel in Riu and the Papagayo area. One way transport from your hotel can take between 15 minutes and 1 hour depending on where you are staying. Total time for ATV ride and round trip transportation can take from 3 to 4 hours.

You’ll need totally enclosed shoes, your bathing suit, towel, a dry change of clothing, insect repellent, rain gear, sun block, snacks, and your camera. During the rainy season, May to mid-November, you may want to waterproof your camera. This outdoor mobile adventure is the perfect addition to your low-impact vacation itinerary in Costa Rica!

The ATV was one of our favorite parts of the trip - we loved going up the mountains, stopping at the beach, stopping at the river, and traveling through the forest. It was a great way to explore the country and our guide was incredible.
