A scenic riverboat cruise, guided nature hike and aerial tram over the rainforest will take you on a whirlwind tour to see Nature up close and personal. If you’re the type that likes to take your time exploring the natural world, this tour was made for you.
The tour begins when you are picked up from your hotel bright and early to be driven to the first stop which is the Sarapiqui River. Here your guide will help you on board a sightseeing riverboat equipped with comfortable seating and overhead protection.
On this cruise, your naturalist guide, who knows the local hiding spots along the edge of the tree canopy, will help you spot and identify all kinds of wildlife. If you are a birder, you will have the opportunity to check several tropical species off your list. The Sarapiqui River is an extensive waterway that not only supports leisurely riverboat cruises but also provides excellent white water rafting in other parts of the river.
After your cruise, you will be taken to the Selva Verde Eco Lodge to go on a nature hike. This eco-friendly hotel and learning center is dedicated to introducing visitors to the abundant ecosystems on the property. The on-site guide knows the 500 acre property like the back of his hand and will take you on a guided tour through the rainforest. You will likely encounter some of the inhabitants of this forest such as Howler monkeys, Keel-Billed toucans, iguanas, and interesting insects like the praying mantis.
Of special interest to birdwatchers are the green macaws, wood rails, sun bitterns, violet-crowned wood nymphs, and toucans living here. You will continue into the almond trees before being surrounded by well-manicured gardens where you can observe the lush foliage and colorful flowers of Costa Rica.
After your hike you’ll hop back into the van and stop for lunch at a local restaurant. The traditional meal is called a “casado” which is a marriage of beans and rice, meat or veggie option, salad and fried plantains and is eaten every day by the locals.
Up next is a trip to the Rain Forest Aerial Tram that runs along a 1,200 acre private reserve boarding the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Supported by heavy cables, this tram will safely carry you up in the air to explore the landscape from a different perspective. The reserve is dedicated to preserving the rainforest and its inhabitants, giving visitors a chance to look for birds and wildlife without disturbing their natural habitat. You’ll spend close to an hour on the gondola before it is time to return to the van and be driven back to your hotel.
This tour includes a bilingual guide, all entrance fees, lunch, plus transportation from Alajuela, Escazu and San Jose.
