Peace Lodge

Vara Blanca - Peace Lodge

Good to Know

A luxury boutique stay on the grounds of La Paz Waterfall Garden, with complimentary garden access and elaborate room designs. Compare the current accommodation layouts; the spa and park attractions invite time at the lodge itself.

Waterfall days and rooms worth lingering in

Waterfalls and richly imagined rooms make Peace Lodge a stay to savor in its own right. About one hour from Juan Santamaria Airport, this luxury boutique hotel occupies the grounds of La Paz Waterfall Garden and Nature Park. Complimentary access to the gardens lets you explore their attractions, then return to a balcony, a rocking chair and the comforts of the lodge.

Let the waterfall gardens fill the day

The grounds bring together waterfall walks, a butterfly conservatory, a hummingbird gallery, an aviary, a trout pond, a serpentarium and a jungle cat exhibit. A pool, Jacuzzi, restaurant and bar add to time at the lodge, with internet access for the practical side of the trip. Ventanas Verdes Spa offers hot rock and chocolate massages, reflexology, men’s facials and exfoliation, giving an unplanned afternoon several inviting possibilities.

Inside the butterfly conservatory, more than 25 species and up to 4,000 butterflies bring color and movement into the visit, alongside views of their different life stages. Hummingbirds and the other park exhibits give you more reasons to take your time. These garden attractions can fill part of a day without carrying you away from the lodge, leaving room afterward for a meal, a treatment or the quieter pleasures of your accommodation.

Rooms with their own reasons to linger

Rooms make that return worth anticipating. Large balconies, rocking chairs and views bring the landscape into the accommodation, while the designs give bathing spaces an unusually prominent role. The 650-square-foot Standard Room looks toward the La Paz River Valley and Poas Volcano from its balcony. A king bed and fireplace anchor the interior, with a balcony Jacuzzi and a mosaic-tiled tub and waterfall shower in the bathroom.

Satellite television, a stereo system, refrigerator, coffee maker and room safe add familiar conveniences across the accommodation. Take coffee outside, enjoy time in a rocking chair or leave an evening open for a soak. The rooms invite attention in their own right, allowing a visit to the waterfall gardens and a luxurious place to return to to share the same day.

At 800 square feet, the Deluxe Room builds on the rainforest theme with a king canopy bed and fireplace. Its garden bathroom includes a Jacuzzi alongside the seven-foot waterfall, a garden shower and an enclosed shower. The balcony has another Jacuzzi, giving you a choice of spaces for a quiet evening, with time to look toward the night sky.

The 1,200-square-foot Monarch Room has three fireplaces, including a two-story fireplace in the living room. Its master bedroom combines a king canopy bed, Jacuzzi and fireplace with a waterfall-shower bathroom. A queen and a single bed occupy the loft, which has a full bathroom; an oversized balcony holds another Jacuzzi.

The three-bedroom Villa Largo brings a different arrangement for larger families or groups. A master bedroom has its own bathroom, a guest bedroom has an adjoining bathroom and the smaller bedroom has two singles. Marble bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs continue the lodge’s emphasis on distinctive bathing spaces. When choosing, confirm which current room category corresponds to the layout you want.

Explore beyond the grounds

Poas Volcano is about half an hour away, and canopy ziplining is another nearby outing. The lodge’s own attractions may claim much of your attention, though: spend time in the gardens, return for a spa treatment and let the room become part of your Costa Rica experience.

Why choose Peace Lodge?

  • Make La Paz Waterfall Garden part of the stay, with complimentary garden access from this luxury boutique lodge on the park grounds, about an hour from Juan Santamaria Airport.
  • Waterfall walks, the butterfly conservatory and its life-stage displays, hummingbird gallery, aviary, trout pond, serpentarium and jungle cat exhibit provide a full range of nature-focused time on site.
  • Balconies, rocking chairs, fireplaces and elaborate Jacuzzi-and-waterfall bathrooms make the accommodation itself a reason to leave gaps between outings; layouts vary by room.
  • The lodge's restaurant, bar, pool and Jacuzzi let quieter hotel hours sit alongside park exploration.
  • Ventanas Verdes Spa offers hot rock and chocolate massages, reflexology, facials and exfoliation for another way to enjoy time at the lodge.
  • Larger accommodation has loft or three-bedroom layouts for families and groups; confirm the current room names and specific features with your vacation specialist before choosing.
  • Poas Volcano is about half an hour away and canopy ziplining is another nearby outing; confirm current volcano access when planning the day.
  • Choose the lodge when nature attractions and a luxurious room experience both belong in the vacation, rather than treating the accommodation only as a place to sleep.

This is not Costa Rica. It's a Disneyesque experience - enjoyable but neither real nor representative. Prices for the minibar, etc. were totally out of line, akin to the Ritz in Paris.

Magical start to our vacation. John Jimenez gave our family an incredible day tour and made our first full day in Costa Rica spectacular!

Sandra C.

An oasis! Our room was spectacular, the grounds were amazing. A great end to our stay in Costa Rica!

BEST BATHROOMS IN THE WORLD! This hotel is absolutely amazing. We wished we could have stayed longer. I could have sit on our balcony and enjoyed the forest view and sounds of animals all day. Hummingbirds are everywhere. We signed up for the evening frog tour and got an unexpected up close and personal sloth experience with an actual awake sloth. That was probably my kids' highlight of our whole trip. The fishing ended at 4:30 but we got there at 4:36 and the guy stayed longer to let us fish. Tip: Get room service for breakfast so you can enjoy the view from your balcony while you eat. The waterfall path is lovely, but wear bug spray! I got eaten up by some sort of mite waiting for the hotel shuttle at the end of the trail. It doesn't look buggy, but they have sneaky bugs.

The room is beautiful, particularly the bathroom. They could use some comfortable chairs in the room.

There were too many steps and no elevator. Tom and I both have trouble climbing steep hills and steps and had to stop a lot to catch our breath. I wish we had known how many steps there were to get to and from the room, the restaurant, and the waterfalls. We did love the place and the staff was great as was the food. I just think you need to let people know who are booking about the step issue.

Beautiful lodge with waterfalls and animals galore. They should provide a free breakfast, but we loved everything else.

Favorite place. Wish we had more than 1 night there

On our arrival, we went to eat lunch while our room was finished. Once we got back in our room, it began to rain right on thru midnight. We did not get outside. This was probably not as welcoming the 2nd time around since it was just a Stopover to the airport the next day.

Our room at the Peace Lodge was wonderful. We had a jacuzzi outside on our balcony plus another jacuzzi in our bathroom which also had a Waterfall plus shower or an inside shower. The rooms was done with lots of wood & the view outside towards Poas volcano was gorgeous. We especially liked the on-grounds aviary, butterfly garden, hummingbird feeding and the feeding of the big cats/felines. We got up close to the sloths & fed the toucans & hummingbirds. It was a wonderful experience, but be prepared for Many steps & lots of walking.

We had been spoiled by single room treehouse and bungalows, so having someone above us and hearing them walk around was irritating at first. But we quickly adjusted. These rooms are amazing and over-the-top with accommodations! The views from the private balconies are impressive. The park is an all-day excursion! We enjoyed feeding the toucans and sloths, and watching the monkeys. The cats appeared lethargic and unhappy. Incredible food at the restaurants. The wait staff is professionally trained and the food is fantastic. The best meals we had on the trip were here at Tortillas and Vista Poas. The many steps to get anywhere did have me worried, but I adjusted and felt like I improved my health along the way. :-D I would recommend the upper level room, both for the noise reduction, convenience (steps), and perhaps a bit better view. Though I'm sure all of the rooms have fantastic views. Breathtaking. I did have to take some nature remedies made for altitude as I became nauseous that high up in the mountains. But they worked right away and I stayed on them while there.

Exceeded our expectations. Incredibly well-trained staff, both at the lodge and at the wildlife park. The bed was a little hard, but that's my only quibble.

Beautiful hotel! Did not realize how close it was to Poas Volcano. That would have been a nice addition to our trip while we were there, but everything we did do was great. Loved the waterfalls along the river, and all the animals in and around the refuge.

I tell everyone who has kids that they MUST stay here at the end of their trip. Two nights here was the perfect amount of time. The whole family loved it and it was great to be so close to the airport on our final day. The rooms are positively luxurious. The breakfast buffet is outstanding. The special treatment given to overnight guests by the property staff is wonderful. I wasn't sure what this place would be like, but am so glad we came. It was a wonderful way to end the trip. Glad we saved it for the end and didn't come here first, because every other place would pale in comparison.

Loved all the things to do on site

Guest review

Two nights was more than sufficient for a stay. The falls and park are impressive. The restaurant was average. We had to return one meal as the marinade was inedible and clearly had reacted badly during preparation. The house keeping was poor. The staff lacked good leadership and appeared very casual in their approach towards guests. The "tropical" bathrooms are great fun, however each room has interconnecting doors with the neighboring room and therefore each and every sound is audible which is not a pleasant experience with the wrong neighbors. Overall an interesting and fun stop over as an alternative to a city hotel prior to departure.

very nice and helpful staff! They even sent back the pants that I forgot there! Will go back there in the future!

Guest review

Excellent. We loved the entire park, including the trails to the waterfalls, exhibits, tours, extra night-time frog tour, location of our balcony at tree-top level to bird-watch from the balcony, amazing butterfly garden and educated staff there, gift shop, etc. The restaurant for dinner was excellent, but we would have appreciated some additional lighter fare options for dinner (better options for children). Overall excellent- we would visit and stay here again.
