Laguna Lodge

Laguna Lodge

Good to Know

Laguna Lodge offers a nature-focused escape on a narrow peninsula in Tortuguero, nestled between the canals and the Caribbean Sea. This 3-star ecolodge provides a serene base for exploring six acres of tropical gardens, enjoying a pool, restaurant, and bar, and embarking on guided canal and national park tours. Rustic rooms feature fans, safes, private bathrooms, and shared terraces, emphasizing an immersive, remote experience over modern luxuries. Guests choose between one- or two-night packages, which include lodging, meals, and round-trip transfers from San José.

Between the canals and the Caribbean

The Tortuguero Canals lie on one side of Laguna Lodge’s narrow peninsula and the Caribbean Sea on the other. Tropical gardens spread across six acres, giving a nature-focused stay room to unfold between waterway outings and quiet intervals on the grounds. Trails, a pool, restaurant and bar bring several ways to enjoy time at the lodge, with a conference room providing another facility for groups.

The landscape and the room

Monkeys, macaws, sloths and crocodiles inhabit the surrounding region; jaguars live here too, though their presence is not an expectation of a sighting. Canal travel gives you a way to watch and learn about this remote habitat. Back at the lodge, rustic rooms have fans, safes, private bathrooms and shared terraces, with no television or air conditioning. WiFi is available in some public areas, but frequent regional outages mean uninterrupted connectivity should not be assumed.

The Caribbean shoreline supplies the scenery, but strong riptides make beach swimming inadvisable; use the pool instead. From the end of July to the beginning of October, nesting turtles add a seasonal reason to explore the shore with a registered guide. Guided nesting visits are not included in the hotel rate, so arrange the outing separately for your dates. This is a canals-and-rainforest stay rather than a beach-swimming vacation.

Choose one night or two

The two-day, one-night and three-day, two-night packages both include lodging, meals, round-trip San José transfers, a guided national park visit and a Tortuguero village visit. The two-night stay also adds a guided walk through the lodge’s gardens and trails, giving the setting a closer look at a slower pace. Buffet lunch is served in the early afternoon and dinner in the evening. Choose the package for the nights you intend to stay, with the additional garden walk considered alongside your canal outings.

Arrange the journey before arrival

You cannot drive directly to Laguna Lodge. From San José, allow approximately four hours to the dock and another hour or so by boat, with a 25-pound boat luggage limit. Round-trip transport serves most San José-area hotels; transfers from select hotels are complimentary and non-transferable. Travel from or onward to other destinations is possible but must be coordinated well in advance.

The village visit also gives you the opportunity to pay park admission in person on arrival. It is outside the lodge rate: $17 per adult, $5 for ages 5–11 and free for younger children, with prices subject to change. Have the travel arrangements and separate admission planned, then leave the lodge hours for a swim, a meal and time among the gardens between excursions.

What to consider when choosing Laguna Lodge

  • Enjoy two landscapes from one base: a narrow peninsula places the canals on one side and the Caribbean on the other, with six acres of tropical gardens and trails around the lodge.
  • Match the package to your nights: one- and two-night options include lodging, meals, San José round-trip transfers, a village visit and a guided national park tour. A two-night stay adds a guided garden and trail walk.
  • Confirm the right pickup and onward route: transfers from select San José hotels are complimentary and non-transferable; travel from or to other destinations must be arranged well ahead.
  • Expect a simple ecolodge room: fans, safes, private bathrooms and shared terraces are provided, with no air conditioning or television.
  • Use the pool for swimming: the Caribbean beach has strong riptides and is not a swimming destination. The gardens, pool, restaurant and bar give you alternatives between outings.
  • Plan nesting visits as a separate guided experience: a registered guide is required, the outing is excluded from the room rate, and the season runs from the end of July to the beginning of October.
  • Prepare for the journey and admission: allow about four hours by road from San José and another hour by boat, with a 25-pound boat luggage limit. Park admission is excluded: $17 per adult, $5 for ages 5–11 and free for younger children, subject to change.
  • Keep expectations for connectivity modest: WiFi is available in some public areas, with frequent regional outages; choose the setting for nature-focused time rather than uninterrupted connection.

We had a wonderful stay with well organized tours by Emilio

Maureen H.

We enjoyed the simplicity, pools and landscaped gardens

Harv D.

The hotel is more rustic but clean and comfortable. The meals were very good and the grounds were beautiful. We weren't expecting a 5 star resort so we certainly enjoyed our stay and the ratings reflect the accommodations in comparison to other accommodations that aren't necessarily in a remote area such as this.

Nice hotel, nice place

Anna D.

Beautiful place! Food and accomodations were perfect! Only criticism is the fans in the room were not adequate to cool the room in the humid heat.

Ruth D.

Food was particularly good here, and plentiful.

Jennifer C.

So I totally get that it was an ecolodge. Super comfortable beds. Food was great. Be prepared for no AC - and it gets hot !! And bugs. I was totally fine with it but brothers may struggle. Pools were nice. Food was delicious !!

Harvey L.

Perhaps too much to ask but air conditioning in the room would have been nice. Room was ok but a bit rustic.

Sandra E.

Beautiful grounds and lovely setting

Sara E.

Beautiful place and lovely staff. The food wasn’t great, especially for vegetarians.

Sofia G.

Food was delicious. The hotel very nice considering that it is a rustic place. The frontdesk girl was not very kind but she was not rude either. The guard Genibe was so nice to us because he showed us the red eye frogs in the pond next to the pool.

Hollie D.

air conditioning would have been nice

Michael R.

Just wish they had air conditioning as an available option even though it's a "eco-hotel".
