My husband just said " i really liked the hotel." We wish it was a bit closer to the beach...the walk back was pretty steep. The swimming pool here and the dining room staff are terrific.
Find your place to stay
Perched on a hilltop in Uvita, Hotel Cristal Ballena pairs sweeping Pacific views with tropical gardens and spacious suites. It’s an appealing choice for travelers who want to explore the South Pacific coast and still leave time for poolside afternoons, a spa treatment and dinner as the sun sets over the ocean. Nearby Marino Ballena National Park brings beaches and the distinctive whale’s-tail formation into your plans, while the hotel’s elevated setting gives you a quieter place to return to.
High above Uvita, tropical gardens frame a sweeping view of the Pacific at Hotel Cristal Ballena. The coast draws your eye beyond the hillside, while the hotel gives you plenty of reasons to stay awhile: a spacious suite, a balcony to linger on, a swim before dinner. Here, the pleasure of a South Pacific vacation extends into the hours between excursions, when you can settle into the landscape and let the afternoon unfold.
This is a setting for days with a little breathing room. Head out to explore Uvita’s beaches and natural attractions, then return to the gardens and pool. Or leave an afternoon unplanned, with time for a spa treatment and a drink as the sun drops toward the ocean. Cristal Ballena brings together the lure of the coast and the quieter pleasures of a hilltop retreat.
The rooms and suites make the most of that setting, opening onto balconies or terraces with ocean or garden views. Spacious interiors, comfortable furnishings and soothing colors create a welcoming place to unpack and settle in. Bring your coffee outside, turn a few pages of a book, or enjoy a conversation with the Pacific in the background—the outdoor space is as much a part of the stay as the room itself.
Junior Suites, Master Suites and Family Suites give you a choice of accommodation for your trip. Amenities include air conditioning, balconies, ocean views, coffee service and mini-fridges, adding familiar comforts to the hillside setting. Whether you are planning time away as a couple or bringing the family, choosing the right suite is part of making this feel like your own Costa Rica escape.
There is an easy appeal to an afternoon beside the swimming pool: a dip in the water, a lounge chair afterward, and no need to hurry on to the next stop. A spa treatment offers another way to unwind, while the hotel’s gardens and trails invite you to spend a little time exploring the grounds. You can be active along the coast and still give yourself these slower moments at the hotel.
As afternoon turns to evening, the restaurant brings fresh, locally sourced ingredients into dishes that draw on Costa Rican and international flavors. Stay for a meal, then enjoy a drink at the bar as sunset becomes the evening’s main attraction. The ocean outlook takes on a different character at this hour, offering a reason to linger long after a day’s adventures are over.
Beyond the hotel, Uvita opens the door to a coast rich in natural attractions. Nearby Marino Ballena National Park is known for its beaches, marine life and distinctive whale’s-tail formation. Humpback whale migration season adds to the fascination of this stretch of the Pacific, while hiking, snorkeling and surfing offer other ways to spend your days. The pleasure is in the balance: venture out into the landscape, then come back to a suite and a view you can enjoy at your own pace.
For travelers who want their hotel to be part of the experience, Cristal Ballena offers an appealing rhythm: coastal adventures, time in the gardens, a swim, and an evening looking out over the Pacific. Leave room in your itinerary for those moments. They are a lovely part of being here.

We loved the restaurant staff. The reception staff were fine, but not as welcoming or helpful as others were on the trip. They were often not around. We had two rooms, but they were in separate buildings. One room was far superior from the other - the beds were far more comfortable, and there weren't any bugs. The smaller room was next to a room under construction, which may have lead to the small bugs all over the bathroom and all over the furniture (tv desk area). They were harmless, but it was gross. We loved the pool the tranquility of the hotel, but there wasn't much nearby for another dinner.

Amazing ocean views and had lot of trees on the property that attracted birds. Nice hotel restaurant, bar, and pool. Very kind staff. Nice way to end the trip in a relaxing resort in a small town.

Gorgeous hotel seemingly in the middle of nature. Lots of birds including the Toucans that we wanted to see. We got there early and before the rooms were ready, but spent our wait at the fantastic pool. Best sunsets of the entire trip viewed from either the room balcony or the pool side bar. Very attentive staff!

What a beautiful resort and spa. The hotel room was incredibly comfortable and so well furnished. The views and the grounds are incredibly beautiful and the many wonderful walking trails through their beautiful grounds is a must. They have a beautifully large swimming pool which lies just outside their restaurant, which is a beautiful outdoor facility. The food is excellent, with carefully prepared dishes for all meals. The view of the mountains and the ocean from their patio is just breath taking and watching the sunsets from the same area is something you'll always remember. The owner stopped by our table to chat one evening and he is so full of life and wonderful amusing stories, about how he happened to stumble on this land which was pasture land before he developed the resort and hotel. It's truly hard to imagine what is looked like in the early 1990's. This would be an outstanding place for weddings.
we loved this place! staff friendly owner visited us every night at dinner and they have a resident cat (we are animal lovers) who regularly visited our room! views of the Pacific Ocean from our room were amazing
