Good to Know

Embark on the Rainforest Experience Hike at Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge, a 3-4 hour guided journey through diverse ecosystems. Led by a bilingual naturalist, this moderate hike reveals two species of monkeys, sloths, toucans, and other iconic Costa Rican wildlife. Ideal for those in good physical condition, it offers an immersive exploration of primary and secondary rainforests, lowlands, and mangrove estuaries. This highly-rated half-day morning tour is not suggested for children under 8 and is unavailable on Sundays.

The Hacienda Baru Biological Center encompasses over 815 acres of land including primary and secondary rainforest, lowlands, and mangrove estuary. During many years of research and hiking, hundreds of animals and birds have been seen as well as a large variety of trees and plants.

The diverse terrain and wildlife that spans the property, creates excellent grounds for the Rainforest Experience Hike. Families, couples and groups of friends have thoroughly enjoyed this hike and have had lots of fun too.

Your bilingual guide will meet you at the starting point and lead you through an active and informative hike, weaving throughout some of the most remote parts of the Hacienda. As a true Costa Rican naturalist, your guide will tell you interesting facts about the area and the flora and fauna that reside there including two types of monkeys, sloths, iguanas, a variety of birds and more. Feel free to bring along binoculars and a camera. You can also take a look into your guides spotting scopes to see the birds and animals up close.

Costa Rica is the home to some of the most interesting iconic creatures known around the world but are rarely seen in many countries because of the particular ecosystems they need to thrive. The bulging red eyes of a green tree frog; the slow moving, seemingly-cuddly two-toed sloth, and the technicolored curved beak of a toucan are regularly seen on rainforest hikes like this one!

This 3-4 hour hike involves moderate physical exercise, walking up and down maintained but hilly trails. During the rainy season the trails can get muddy so make sure to bring hiking boots or running shoes. Don’t forget your bug repellent, hat, and bottle of water. No transportation is needed from Hacienda Baru. Transportation is not included from other area hotels. It is not suggested for children under 8 years of age. This activity is not available on Sundays.

This guide was knowledgeable but not as friendly or forthcoming with information. He hardly ever set up his scope for pictures. However, he found us several sloths to view after we told him we had not seen any.
