Our room had a private courtyard with a fountain. We enjoyed a bottle of wine with our friends and had a great time. This hotel is very unusual, but in a very good way. Would definitely stay there again.

San José takes on a more intimate character at Hotel Grano de Oro, where a restored Victorian mansion provides the setting for a boutique stay. Architectural details, furnishings and artwork give the hotel a sense of history without asking you to give up contemporary comfort. It is a place to enjoy the capital at a measured pace, with the pleasures of the building forming part of the visit.
Tropical gardens, trickling fountains and seating areas create a quieter pause within the city. Take a moment there after visiting a museum or browsing a market, then enjoy the rooftop terrace’s panoramic views of San José. A book or a drink can become a simple reason to stay at the hotel for a while rather than moving straight to the next attraction.
Classic and contemporary details carry the mansion’s character into the rooms, with plush bedding, luxurious linens and spacious bathrooms for the hours after exploring. Air conditioning, free internet and coffee service add familiar ease. Family Suites have two bedrooms, while Vista de Oro includes a living room and hot tub; compare the room or suite around the space your party wants.
The restaurant focuses on Costa Rican cuisine and fresh, locally sourced ingredients, carrying the experience from breakfast through dinner. An evening meal at the hotel can become a highlight of the city stay, rather than a decision made only for convenience. The mansion’s character gives you a reason to enjoy the hours around it as well.
Museums, galleries, theaters and markets are within a short stroll, allowing San José’s cultural life to shape the days beyond the hotel. Grano de Oro suits a traveler who wants both: time exploring the capital and a distinctive, welcoming place to return to.
Warm, attentive staff offer personal recommendations and help with the details of your visit. Ask for suggestions that fit your interests, then leave time for the mansion itself as well as the capital beyond it.

They upgraded us to a Suite. The staff was extremely friendly and overall they made us feel very welcome.

room was a little small. We had to be moved to another room after getting settled because the shower did not work

Most memorable, friendly professional staff of all the places we stayed (though the others were good too, this was the best).

Restaurant was excellent and staff was very friendly and helpful. The only drawback was the double beds were too small and made sleeping uncomfortable compared to queen/king beds.

This is a beautiful, historic hotel, with an impeccable staff. The gift shop offered some of the finest gifts and artifacts that we had seen in CR, and they were reasonably priced. The neighborhood did not lend itself to walking at dusk.

Actually this hotel EXCEEDED our expectations. A lovely place with an excellent staff. Nice to be welcomed with a refreshing beverage. We wish we could have stayed longer! Our only negative was a short night's sleep. We got to the hotel at midnight and had to depart at 7:00 am. We had no opportunity to eat breakfast at the hotel since the restaurant opened at 7:00 am.

Beautiful place, but the restaurant prices were out of this world expensive ! The staff at the door were able to guide us to some local food places that were great.

Neat hotel. Not much around.
This hotel is amazing! You are welcomed by the staff with wonderfully warm smiles and they all very readily answer any questions you may have. From the doorman/security, concierge, dining staff -- this experience was A+ fantastic!
Great to be back at the Grano de Oro again. Loved the rooftop hot tubs and the dining room.
Great place to stay
The hotel is very lovely in a very unimpressive part of town. (I don't know San Jose at all!) It was beautiful, clean, we liked our family suite & it was very comfortable for 1 night. It would have been nice to have a few choices for restaurants, because it was a bit formal for our children (21,18 & 15).
This one was a bit of a surprise. We were not expecting what we got.... one of the neatest places we have staid and we have traveled a bit through the world. Room was smallish ( we had their basic room) but very comfortable! The food..... outstanding! We were not eating breakfast there in the plan but we did just to see what they had to offer! STAY HERE if you can!
Wish we could have stayed a little longer.
Loved it! Enjoyed the upgrade so much! Would have loved to have been able to stay on.
We requested a room change as the first room did not reflect the website description of a deluxe room with an adjoining courtyard. The hotel restaurant is excellent with a commendable wine list and most impressive interior. The food was of a high standard and the dining experience is memorable.
Waiters in the restaurant were rude. The hotel room was tiny and lacked amenities.
