Overview

Make your Costa Rican dreams come true riding horses over miles of deserted beach, crossing freshwater streams, as you make your way to El Chorro Waterfall. Catered to your skill and interest level, you can go galloping wildly across the beach or saunter along taking in the fresh ocean air at a comfortable stride. You’ll stop for a swim before retracing your steps over the changing tides.

This tour begins at the Montezuma Expeditions office at Montezuma Beach located near the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. Here you will meet your experienced guide who will help you saddle up on the perfect well-mannered horse that matches your riding experience.

You’ll set off on a 3-hour expedition northward from this tiny beach town following the coastline as you traverse several beaches, mostly deserted. If you like, you can gallop across Playa Montezuma and Playa Grande as they have long flat stretches at the shoreline. Or, if you prefer, you can choose a slower pace to savor the ocean air and pristine coastline.

At Playa Grande, you’ll pass by a protected sea turtle nesting area, quiet with minimal development filled with tranquility. The beach sand varies from white to dark to a reddish color caused by the volcanic activity over the years.

You’ll pass through several freshwater streams before reaching the El Chorro Waterfall lying at the end of Playa Cocolito. At the waterfall, you can stop to swim or explore the shoreline as your guide provides rejuvenating freshly cut fruit and bottled water.

Afterwards you’ll retrace your steps discovering the changes in the tide levels along the way. Again, you can choose to gallop the flat parts of the beaches or take your time enjoying the scenery. This is an approximate 8-mile trip.

The tour includes an experienced guide, horses, fresh fruit, and water. Since the tour is tide dependent, you will be scheduled at low tide. The length of the tour is approximately 3 hours. It is best to wear lightweight long pants and you’ll need totally enclosed shoes for the stirrups. Please bring sun protection like a hat and sunblock, plus your camera to take home all the memories.
