9-day Costa Rica itinerary
What happens each day on Costa Rica Family Oasis: Luxury Adventures for All Ages?
Follow the starting itinerary day by day, then use Customize to explore stays, experiences, transportation, and pace.
Current route: Alajuela suburbs → Uvita → Arenal
Day 1: Arrive in Costa Rica and settle into Xandari
Begin with a private transfer from San Jose International Airport to Xandari Resort and Spa in the Alajuela suburbs. Settle into your first night in Costa Rica and let the family ease into vacation before tomorrow’s journey to the Pacific coast.
Day 2: Travel to Uvita and Elan at Ballena Beach
Continue to Uvita on the South Pacific coast for four nights at Elan at Ballena Beach. Settle into your accommodation, unpack and enjoy the change of scene: rainforest-covered hills and the coast set the rhythm for the next few days.
Day 3: An open beach day in Uvita
Keep today free for family time along Uvita’s coast. No guided activity is included today, so you can relax and explore at your own pace. Choose beach activities for the conditions and your children’s abilities, or ask your planner about an optional outing.
Day 4: Explore Manuel Antonio National Park with a naturalist
Head out from your Uvita base for a guided visit to Manuel Antonio National Park. Walk rainforest trails with a naturalist who helps you notice wildlife and understand the forest around you. Monkeys, sloths and tropical birds may be spotted, but sightings vary. Return to your Uvita stay after the excursion.
Day 5: Another unhurried day on the South Pacific coast
Enjoy a second open day in Uvita with no scheduled guided excursion. Spend time together at your accommodation or explore the beaches as conditions allow. This pause between the park visit and the journey to Arenal leaves room for the family to enjoy the coast without rushing.
Day 6: Travel to Arenal and Nayara Tented Camp
Leave the South Pacific coast and continue to La Fortuna for three nights at Nayara Tented Camp. Settle into your rainforest base near Arenal Volcano. The next two days bring different perspectives on the forest, from the canopy to an evening walk.
Day 7: Sky Tram, Trek and Walk in Arenal
Experience Arenal’s forest from above and along its trails on the included Sky Tram, Trek and Walk outing. Ride the gondola, take part in the zipline adventure and follow a guided walk across trails and hanging bridges. Confirm age, height and other participation requirements with your planner when choosing this activity for your family.
Day 8: Discover the rainforest after dark
As daylight fades, join the included Arenal Volcano Night Walk for a different view of the rainforest. Your guide helps you look for nocturnal wildlife and understand the forest’s evening activity. Frogs, snakes and other creatures may appear, though sightings are never guaranteed. This outing does not promise a visit to the viewpoint.
Day 9: Return to San Jose International Airport
Return from Arenal to San Jose International Airport, arriving three hours before your flight. Your planner confirms departure timing and the return journey for your selected transportation plan.

One family vacation, from the Pacific coast to Arenal
Costa Rica Family Oasis brings together the pleasures of an unhurried beach stay and the excitement of discovering a rainforest. The nine-day starting journey begins with an easy first night in Alajuela, opens into four nights on Uvita’s South Pacific coast, and finishes with three nights near Arenal Volcano. Rather than filling every day with an outing, it gives the family time to settle in, explore together and enjoy the contrast between coast and forest.
Xandari is the starting point after arrival, followed by Elan at Ballena Beach and Nayara Tented Camp. Those stays frame one connected vacation: a gentle introduction, room to breathe by the Pacific, then a finale that takes you into the canopy and out into the forest after dark.
Uvita: time together where the rainforest meets the coast
On the South Pacific coast, rainforest-covered hills give way to Uvita’s beaches. Four nights here make the coast a place to settle into, with two open beach days around the guided Manuel Antonio visit. There is time to enjoy your accommodation, explore the shore when conditions allow and let the day follow your family’s pace.
Elan at Ballena Beach is the starting stay; Cristal Ballena and La Cusinga are among the alternatives to discuss. An optional Naranjo rafting outing offers another way to experience the area for families who meet its participation requirements. Your planner can help balance active ideas with the open days that give this vacation its breathing space.
A coastal rainforest outing at Manuel Antonio
The Day 4 visit to Manuel Antonio adds a guided discovery day without changing your Uvita base. With a naturalist, the rainforest becomes more than a green backdrop: you can look for monkeys, sloths and tropical birds while learning about the habitat along the trails. Wildlife sightings vary, making each walk its own experience.
Back in Uvita, the following open day keeps the trip from feeling like a succession of excursions. Discuss the journey, walking demands and children’s needs with your planner, or compare an eligible alternative for this outing while keeping the wider coastal stay.
Arenal: a rainforest finale with two different adventures
The journey then turns inland to La Fortuna and Arenal, exchanging coastal days for a rainforest setting near the volcano. Nayara Tented Camp is the starting base for three nights. Day 7’s Sky Tram, Trek and Walk combines a gondola ride, ziplining and a guided walk across trails and hanging bridges; Day 8’s Arenal Volcano Night Walk invites the family to notice what changes after sunset.
These two outings bring different kinds of discovery to the final chapter of the vacation. Nayara Gardens and Arenal Springs are among the stay alternatives, and you can compare another activity separately for each included outing. Choose around your children’s ages, interests and participation requirements, with rental car or private transfers connecting the complete trip.
What are the highlights of Costa Rica Family Oasis?
- A balanced family rhythm: an arrival night in Alajuela, four nights in Uvita and three nights near Arenal combine settling-in time, coastal relaxation and rainforest adventures.
- Two open coastal days: Days 3 and 5 have no scheduled guided activity, leaving room to enjoy Uvita at your family’s pace.
- A guided wildlife perspective: Day 4’s Manuel Antonio National Park visit pairs rainforest trails with a naturalist; animal sightings vary.
- Two ways to discover Arenal: Day 7 includes Sky Tram, Trek and Walk, followed by the Arenal Volcano Night Walk on Day 8. Check participation requirements for your children.
- Choices that keep the vacation connected: compare stays in each area and alternatives for each included tour, then choose rental car or private transfers for the complete route. Your planner confirms fit, logistics and the revised quote.
